Embracing the Intricacies: A SENCOs guide to Psychology & Education

by | Sep 4, 2023

If you’ve ever found yourself captivated by the intricate dance of cognitive development, pondered upon the endless possibilities of learning, or just yearned to unravel the hidden potentials within every learner, you’ve embarked on the right journey. Over the forthcoming series of posts, we shall delve deep into the heart of educational psychology, illuminating its profound impact on special education.

SETTING THE STAGE: OUR ADVENTURE AWAITS

To give you a taste of what’s to come, we recently embarked on a whimsical journey through Piaget’s world of cognitive development – that lively playground of the mind where square pegs don’t necessarily have to fit into round holes. But that’s just the beginning! We’ve mapped out an exciting expedition, touching upon legendary theorists, their groundbreaking ideas, and – most importantly – their application within the universe of special educational needs.

Sneak Peek Into Our Psychological Safari

From the insights of Bandura’s social learning to the nuances of Erikson’s developmental stages, we’ll embark on a transformative journey across psychological landscapes. We’ll dive deep into Seligman’s positive psychology, embrace the depth of Bowlby’s attachment revelations, and appreciate the diverse mindscapes illuminated by Tomlinson’s differentiation dance. Each voyage, each revelation, seeks to arm you—stalwart SENCOs—with knowledge and tools that can redefine the learning experience for every unique learner.

In our series, journey with us as we navigate Bronfenbrenner’s ecological layers, understanding the intertwining of an individual’s development within their environment. Marvel at the strength behind Dweck’s growth mindset, advocating for the potential embedded in our attitudes. Glide alongside Montessori’s vision for tailored education, embracing the principle of learning at one’s own pace. Celebrate the foundations laid by Pavlov in behaviourism, understanding the stimuli that influence us. And immerse yourself in Kabat-Zinn’s mindfulness teachings, emphasising well-being and focus in our fast-paced world. Each of these luminaries offers valuable perspectives, and our mission is to harness their wisdom to further enrich the realm of special education.

Sen Magic: Where Theory Meets Practice

What sets these posts apart? Well, while we revere the wisdom of our pioneering psychologists, we also acknowledge the need for a twist – a touch of SEN magic. Every theory, every idea will be seen through the lens of special education, ensuring that our voyage is not just theoretical, but also deeply practical.

Join Us On This Quest

So, whether you’re a seasoned SENCO, a budding educational enthusiast, or someone who believes in the infinite potential of every learner, there’s something in store for you. With each post, expect a blend of theory, real-world application, and that essential sprinkle of SEN magic.  So, buckle up for this exhilarating ride as we traverse the peaks and valleys of psychology and education, always with the heart of a SENCO, seeking ways to kindle brilliance in every learner.

(Each post is only a taster and does not purport to explain the theories in depth – I need more content for the rest of the year and beyond!)
